Car Prep

Being prepared for emergencies is crucial, especially when you're on the road. Having a well-stocked emergency kit in your car can provide peace of mind and help you navigate unexpected situations. I always joke that mom’s will survive if their car breaks down because it’s full of random junk, snacks and water - and it’s not a lie. I remember being broken down on top of a bridge at midnight (terrifying…), but I had a car filled with everything I needed - including a travel potty. I was stuck for a few hours, but didn’t go with out any of my basic needs being met. Thanks kids!

Basic Car Essentials:

  • Spare tire, jack, and lug wrench: These items are essential for changing a flat tire. Most cars come equipped with them in the trunk - but if you’re unsure, check your car and get familiar with these items. Ensure they are in good condition and suitable for your vehicle.

  • Jumper cables or portable battery booster: These will help jump-start your car if the battery dies.

  • Reflective warning triangles or flares: Use these to warn other drivers of a breakdown or accident.

  • Tire pressure gauge: Maintain optimal tire pressure for safety and fuel efficiency. Most new cars come equipped with meters that let you know if tire pressure is off, but it’s always good to have a back up.

  • Basic toolkit: Include a set of screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench, and other necessary tools for minor repairs.

Survival Items:

  • Water and non-perishable food: Keep bottled water and non-perishable snacks like energy bars or dried fruits for sustenance during emergencies.

  • Flashlight and extra batteries: Ensure you have a reliable light source for visibility in the dark.

  • Multi-purpose tool: A versatile tool with features like a knife, screwdriver, can opener, and more will prove invaluable.

  • Whistle: Use it to signal for help in case of an emergency.

  • Emergency blanket: This compact, thermal blanket provides warmth during cold weather.

  • Pepper spray or personal safety alarm: Enhance personal safety with these self-defense tools.

  • Emergency contact card: Carry a card with important contacts, including family members, doctors, and insurance providers.

  • Poncho or raincoat: Stay dry and protected during inclement weather.

  • Portable phone charger: Keep your phone powered up for communication during emergencies.

Children's Emergency Kit:

  • Extra clothing and blankets: Pack spare clothes, socks, and blankets suitable for your child's size.

  • Comfort items: Include a favorite toy, books, or activities to keep children calm during stressful situations.

  • Baby supplies: If applicable, bring diapers, wipes, formula, and baby food.

  • Emergency contact information: Keep a card with your child's emergency contact details, allergies, and any important medical information.

Being prepared for emergencies while on the road is crucial for your safety and the well-being of your loved ones. By keeping a well-stocked emergency kit in your car, tailored to the needs of your family, you can navigate unexpected situations with confidence (and comfort). Remember to regularly check and replenish your supplies to ensure they are up to date and in good condition. Stay prepared, stay safe!
